Who says hackers can’t save the world? Or, for that matter, our oceans?
This June, Venture Hive partnered with the State Department to host Miami’s 2nd Annual Fishackathon. A total of 15 cities around the world participated in Fishackathon, a meeting of tech folks, enthusiasts and coders who—over the course of a weekend—created tools and solutions to address the current challenges in sustainable fishing.
We are truly in the midst of a global oceanic crisis. Polluted oceans, unhealthy fish, a lack of sustainable fishing and inaccurate fish catch compliance reporting are just a few of the problems our oceans face.
Programmers and technologists at Fishackathon—hashtag #codeforfish—brainstormed and created possible solutions to help solve this crisis. Examples of #codeforfish projects include GPS sensing paired with radar network to tackle illegal fishing, data-mapping fisheries for sustainability, and an app that lists and rates nearby sustainable seafood grocers, restaurants and retailers.
Although the Fishackathon event takes place over the course of only one weekend, its impact on our world’s ocean crisis is lasting.
